Couples Counselling After a Move to Portugal
A relocation is sold as a fresh start. What it actually does is remove every external structure a couple was leaning on and leave the two of you holding the whole thing.
That is not a failure of the relationship. It is what happens when you delete the commute, the colleagues, the Sunday lunches, the gym, the two sets of old friends, and the ambient noise of a life you did not have to build on purpose. Whatever was already slightly wrong now has nothing to hide behind.
The pattern we see most often
Roughly nine to fourteen months after the move, one partner comes to us and says a version of: we were fine before we came here.
Usually they were not quite fine. They were busy. Busy is an excellent anaesthetic for a relationship that has stopped talking about anything except logistics.
The asymmetry nobody plans for
Almost every relocation has an initiator and a follower. One person had the job, the opportunity, the dream about the light and the sea. The other agreed.
Six months in, the initiator has an office, a team, a reason to leave the house and a story about why this was a good idea. The follower has a residency appointment, a landlord, and a lot of afternoons. The initiator hears complaints as ingratitude. The follower hears enthusiasm as dismissal. Neither is wrong and neither can say it plainly, because the whole thing was supposed to be a shared adventure.
We name that asymmetry in the first session, out loud, with both of you present. Most couples have never said it in the same room.
Our Lisbon practice has written about this pattern in more clinical depth — including the research on when it tends to peak and the EFT framework we use with it. Worth reading alongside this page, not instead of it.
What we work on
- Separating the move from the marriage. Some of what hurts is grief about a country, not a complaint about a partner. Sorting the two changes the argument entirely.
- Rebuilding a life outside the couple. Two people cannot be each other's entire social world without resentment. This is practical work, not a metaphor.
- Renegotiating the deal. The agreement you made before you moved was made by people who did not know what this would be like. It is allowed to be revised.
- Deciding about staying. Sometimes the honest outcome is that one of you wants to go home. That is a conversation worth having deliberately rather than by attrition.
Who this is for
Partners in Cascais, Estoril, Carcavelos, Parede and Oeiras who moved to Portugal in the last three years — for work, for a visa, for the schools, or for the reasons people give when the real reason is harder to say. Sessions in English, in person or online while one of you is travelling.
